I barely had the energy to make it through my work shifts after school. Then one day I thought I'd discovered the "holy grail" that would help me lose the weight quickly...

 


...the almighty DIET!

 


Losing the first 5 to 10 pounds by dieting wasn’t that difficult but I couldn’t keep the weight off. In fact, no matter which diet I tried-high-carb, low-carb, no-carb, low-fat, high protein, I would end up light-headed, exhausted and practically starving after only a week or two.

 

Then would come the inevitable binge where I ate and ate and would end up gaining back all the weight I lost plus a couple pounds above where I began. I kept repeating this vicious "on again, off again" cycle for a few years without being able to keep the weight off.


Then, one day I read an article in a popular fitness magazine that said doing an hour of cardio in my "fat burning zone" for 3-5 days each week was the best way to lose the weight and get my stomach flat…and so I did cardio…I did LOTS of cardio.

 

It worked a little bit for a few weeks or so and I lost about 10 pounds and then I hit the dreaded plateau. So, I figured that if cardio worked before I just needed to do more cardio to make it work again.


Before long I was in the gym doing 90-minute, marathon cardio sessions 6 days a week (talk about not having a life outside of the gym) and even some of the exercise machines.

 

But, my body refused to change. I still had a thin, soft body and the same ugly, loose stomach fat even though I had lost a couple more pounds.

 

It felt like I spent more hours in the gym than there were in a day and I still couldn’t lose the last 10 pounds I had left. On top of that, I felt exhausted all the time and was on the edge of burn out.


At the time I didn’t realize that after a few weeks your body adapts to the same cardio routine by burning fewer calories and after this adaptation your metabolism begins to slow down.

 

And, by doing more cardio your body starts to burn muscle instead of fat which makes it nearly impossible to lose any more weight but easy to gain it back. That’s one reason why it’s harder to lose the last ten pounds than it is to lose the first ten.

 

Just about anything works in the beginning until your body gets used to it. That’s when things get difficult. But, no matter how much cardio I did my body flat-out refused to burn another ounce of fat.


I also thought exercise machines for my stomach, legs and arms would get my body toned. I didn’t know that those machines are some of the LEAST EFFECTIVE ways to lose weight and get a firm body because they don’t burn fat from your trouble areas and they don’t really boost your metabolism.

 

And, no matter how many crunches, leg raises or arm exercises I did I just couldn’t lose the last 10 pounds like I wanted.

 


I made another really big mistake back then. I didn’t know that losing fat and losing weight are not the same. I had lost weight but didn’t realize that most of it came from the loss of water and muscle but not a lot of fat.

 

So, I looked a little smaller overall but still had the same soft spots and trouble areas as before. And, to make things worse my metabolism was starting to slow down because I lost muscle.

 

I didn’t know that I needed to lose body fat to get a toned body with definition because diet books and weight loss reality shows never mention it. All they talk about is losing weight.


But, even at my "ideal weight" I still had a thin, soft body with that embarrassing stomach flab. That’s what they call “skinny fat”.

 

But, I never really looked overweight as long as I was wearing a baggy shirt. It felt horrible spending summer weekends wearing my baggy clothes while my friends enjoyed swimming and laying out under the sun.

 

I even got teased a few times about wearing "maternity" clothes.

 


I lost the first 10 pounds and just needed to lose the last 10 lbs or so of extra fat (not simply weight) to get the flat stomach and toned body I wanted so badly. This is where things got really difficult.


Deep down I knew that all the diets, the cardio, the caffeine and so-called "energy drinks" I practically lived on were doing more harm than good.

 

Back then I believed that I needed them to give me energy to make it through the day. I didn't know how wrong I was.

 

I later learned how this way of living was destroying my metabolism (and my health) which made trying to lose the last 10 pounds impossible.

 

I thought a simple approach like eating less and exercising more would be enough to get the weight off, but before I knew it I ended up gaining back all the weight I lost (along with a few extra pounds) and I was miserable and felt hopeless.

 

And, I thought that I just had the wrong body type or blamed my ‘bad genetics’ for not being able to lose the fat. Fortunately, you don't have to go through those same mistakes like I did.

I also began using exercises that allowed me to work my entire body with each movement rather than my former method of having to use multiple time-consuming exercises for each part of the body.
